Athlete Spotlight with Edmond Memorial’s Lydia Viets – Presented by Andrew Ruiz-Shelter Insurance

A member of the varsity soccer team at Edmond Memorial High School, Lydia Viets plays midfielder and said she loves the position because it allows her to always be involved in the game.

Now a senior, Viets started playing soccer when she was in kindergarten. Over years of competition, Viets has developed her game and has great field vision.

“One of my biggest strengths is my vision of the field. I know where to play the ball and where to move. I’ve gotten a lot better at turning with the ball around defenders to generate an attack,” said Viets.

Viets said her relationship with her teammates is part of what makes being on the team special for her.

“I love how we all have a good relationship outside of soccer. The girls on the team are some of my closest friends, making practice and games even more fun,” said Viets.

While soccer is her sport, Viets said she enjoys the classroom work as well and is a member of National Honor Society. Her goal is to get a great education while playing the sport she loves.

“After high school I’ll go to KU to play outside back. I’ll most likely be majoring in Business Finance. This summer is mostly going to be preparation for college soccer. I’ll be heading to the University of Kansas to play, so until then I’ll be training at home and getting ready for the next level,” said Viets.

Inspiration can come in many forms, but for Viets it comes from her parents.

“Both my parents have been an inspiration to me. Both of them hold themselves and I to a very high standard. They know my potential and motivate me to reach it. Both of them are hard workers who work to accomplish their goals every day,” said Viets.
