Newcastle Racers Boys & Girls Basketball Preview (2023-24) — Presented by First National Bank & Trust Co.

NEWCASTLE RACERS

BOYS

Coach: Jessie Brown

2022-23 Record: 21-7

After an excellent year, Jessie Brown looks to build upon his team’s 21 wins and state tournament appearance last year.

GIRLS

Coach: Nichole Copeland

2022-23 Record: 11-16

Newcastle girls head coach Nichole Copeland has her sights set on a successful sophomore season after leading the Racers to 11 wins in her first year. It was a far cry from the three combined wins the Racers posted in the two seasons prior to Copeland’s hire. “We return three starters from last season, where we lost five games by a total of 7 points,” Copeland said. “Playing in the WAC is brutal with four teams from our conference making the state tournament last season.” It’s true; four teams from the conference, including the eventual 4A state champion, Bethany, made the final eight last year, but it didn’t deter Copeland’s long-term ambitions. “We are looking to grow from our experiences last season and expect to be even more competitive this season.” Reagan Greenroyd (5-7, So.) started every game for the Racers as a freshman. She can get to the rim, hit mid-range shots and has come a long way as a perimeter shooting threat. She usually guarded the opposing team’s best backcourt player last year. “Reagan has not played for one of the major AAU programs, so she is flying under the radar from most media outlets,” Copeland said.
