Piedmont’s Sophie Payne
By Bryce McKinnis
Piedmont High School junior Sophie Payne doesn’t merely chase success on the volleyball court. She’s after perfection.
“Growing up, I’ve played every sport, but as of right now, I just play volleyball. I was introduced to volleyball by my friend, Bentlie Blankenship,” Payne said. “She played club volleyball, and it looked like fun, but it definitely took a lot of work and lots of practice, lifts and lessons. Nothing came easy.”
It’s hard to believe that a player of Payne’s caliber, who flies around the court and routinely jumps out of the gym (see photo) wasn’t always a natural, but her perseverance — and the mentorship of Oklahoma Charge and former Sooners head coach Santiago Restrepo — has elevated her game to great heights.
“I have progressed my back row, athleticism, confidence and leadership on the court,” Payne said. “The main difference maker has been three things coach Restrepo taught me: nutrition, lifting and mastering my craft.”
Payne is also self-described as “super competitive,” fueling her to accept any challenges she faces.
“There’s lots of obstacles you have to overcome in volleyball. It teaches you how to have a strong mindset for life,” Payne said. “I hate to lose, no matter what I’m doing. From a family board game to who makes it home from dinner first, I’m always keeping score and trying to beat someone.”
Because she understands the work necessary to succeed, Payne has become a resource for her teammates. She strives to consistently impact her teammates’ success.
“The thing I love most about volleyball is the friends and memories I’ve made along the way,” Payne said. “I aspire to be someone they look to when they need a confidence boost — or a joke.”
Also an active member of Piedmont’s FCA chapter and student council, Payne’s goals include helping the Wildcats to a state tournament appearance this season.
“My life goals are to be thankful every day and enjoy the ride.”
