Heritage Hall’s Xzavier Mbroh
By Bryce McKinnis
Through two years of varsity basketball, Heritage Hall sophomore guard Xzavier Mbroh has demonstrated unique skill. As he enters his junior year, he’ll not only be expected to light up the score book but to instill discipline and toughness in his teammates.
“My role on the team this year is for me to be the leader on the court,” said Mbroh, who averaged 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals as a sophomore. “As the point guard for the team, being the best decision maker and being the most vocal is something that will be crucial for me this year.”
Those traits didn’t always come naturally for Mbroh.
“Some days, I would think I’m not good enough or not strong enough,” Mbroh said. “It was a tough time, because I would be missing a ton of shots or getting bumped around a lot. My confidence being low caused me to second guess a lot.”
Thankfully for Mbroh, several people in his life were eager to take him under their wing. Elder Heritage Hall point guards like Rashaud Smith and Sebastian Perry (who now plays at the University of Central Oklahoma) instilled his moxie. He also plays for Proskills on the Nike EYBL circuit, placing him against the best competition in the country on a weekly basis in the summers. With added mentorship from sisters Keyoni (Mizzou track), Alexis (Oklahoma Baptist hoops) and Alazsa, his father and coaches, Mbroh began to develop the crucial skill of confidence.
“I feel like I’ve evolved in a sense of getting my voice out there and more heard,” Mbroh said. “Coming into high school, I was more quiet and didn’t say too much. Now, I feel like I have to be the loudest on the court because it helps the team the most.”
As he approaches his junior year, the returning All-Conference Second Team selection and Jones Tournament MVP has a clear vision for his team.
“My goal for this season is to win, plain and simple,” Mbroh said. “I don’t have many personal goals. If I do whatever it takes to win, accolades and achievements will come with it.”
