Newcastle’s Baylor Blakey
Newcastle senior Baylor Blakey has built his high school career on consistency, connection and a genuine love for the game of baseball. As he prepares to graduate, the versatile corner infielder is savoring every remaining inning with teammates he considers much more than just a lineup around him.
Blakey plays first and third base for the Racers, embracing two of the most demanding spots on the field. The reaction time is minimal, and the margin for error is even smaller. “I play first and third and the hardest thing about those positions is how hard the ball is hit to you,” Blakey said. It is a challenge he welcomes, using every rep in practice and every pitch in a game to sharpen his instincts and footwork.
What drives Blakey most is the unpredictable nature of baseball. He never knows when the next big moment will come, and that’s exactly what keeps him locked in. “The aspect I love most about baseball is the unknown. Anything can happen in baseball,” he said. From bad hops to late rallies, he has learned to stay ready and embrace the chaos that defines the sport.
Blakey’s love of the game is shaped in part by New York Yankees star Aaron Judge, a player he admires for his power, poise and leadership. That example fuels Blakey’s own approach as a senior presence in the Newcastle dugout, where he aims to set a standard for younger players with his work ethic and attitude.
Still, when he looks back on his time at Newcastle, it is the relationships that stand out most. “The memories I will cherish in high school are all the moments I shared with my friends whether it was playing sports or being in the classroom,” Blakey said. “What I love most about playing for Newcastle is all my teammates, I’ve known them my whole life and they’re my second family.”
After graduation, Blakey plans to attend Oklahoma State University to study sports media, keeping him close to the games that have shaped him. Whether he is on the field or behind a microphone, his foundation at Newcastle and the bonds built through baseball will continue to guide his future.
