Golf is a sport that in Oklahoma can be played nearly 12 months out of the year. Sure, you get a few days when it’s too cold or too much snow, but for players like Bryce Freeman of Tuttle High School, every day is a good day to golf.
The No. 1 bag for the Tigers is poised for another big year after helping his team to a 4th place finish at the state tournament last year. Then, Freeman was the No. 2 bag on a team that was loaded with seniors. Now he is taking on the role of being the top player and said he is ready to get the season underway.
“I have learned that you can’t lose focus over something small,” Freeman said. “The main strength of my game is putting, and I’ve improved my iron play.”
As we all know, short game is everything and for Freeman, it’s become his mission to improve his irons. Head coach Matt Layman said he expects to see good things from his one-bag this season.
“Bryce is a good athlete who has chosen to focus on golf and has the goal to play at the college level after high school. Last year he averaged 78.4 for a season scoring average and will most definitely improve on that this year due to the time and effort he put in over the offseason in the weight room and on the golf course,” said coach Layman.
Freeman stared playing golf in the eighth grade and has developed his favorites over the years.
“My favorite course to play is Boiling Springs because you have to be precise with your shots,” said Freeman.
While golf may be an individual sport, Freeman said he loves being around his teammates and what they bring to the course.
“I have been impressed by my teammates Peirce and Peyton Cross because they got a lot better over the offseason. Reece is the teammate who keeps everyone laughing,” Freeman said. “The thing I like the most about my teammates is that they always are positive.”
Before every tournament Freeman likes to get into the right mindset and stay focused on the task at hand. As for speaking to his playing partner…
“I make sure to have good thoughts on the range before a tournament,” Freeman said. “I speak to most of my opponents unless they do not want to talk.”
The season will tee off on March 10th at the Purcell Invitational at Brent Bruehl Golf Club.
