Here come the Edmond Santa Fe Wolves, barreling towards a postseason run.
Ranked No. 8 in 6A with 17 wins, the Wolves have had an eventful year, thrice beating the No. 1 team in 6A.
“This season has been a fun journey for our team so far,” Santa Fe head coach Drew McCarty said. “We’ve had our ups and downs as every team does, but the effort and determination of every player has been outstanding. We put in a ton of work in the weight room during the offseason and it has been really great to see that pay off on the court. We’ve worked really hard this season on staying connected through each match, and our seniors have led us well!”
The Wolves opened the season upsetting then-No. 1 Broken Arrow 2-1 in the Norman Tournament.
“Several players have really stood out this season. [TCU commit] Anna Rice has been a consistent powerhouse, leading the team in kills and always bringing intensity to every match,” McCarty said. “Reagan Mason has taken up the role as our 5-1 setter this year, and the team has rallied around her leadership and support. We have two freshmen, Blair Smith and Nayeli Dragoo-Crawford, who have really stepped up for us. Their performance in crucial moments has been a game-changer, and their growth has inspired the entire team.”
The Wolves played and defeated current No. 1 Moore in the Heather Harkness Invitational 2-1 on Sept. 6. Then, in the Bishop McGuinness Clancy Classic Tournament three weeks later , lightning struck twice.
“We had to play a tough match against Moore in the semifinals, who was ranked No. 1 in 6A and had defeated us at home earlier that week,” McCarty said. “The team pulled together and took them down in four sets!”
McCarty had no words to describe the team’s energy and “connectedness.” The Wolves were just electric.
“We then faced McGuinness in the finals, taking them down in five sets to win the championship,” McCarty said. “For us to show resilience against two teams who had recently beaten us shows our grit and commitment to playing hard for each other.”
