Q&A with Edmond Memorial’s Claire Viets – Presented by Andrew Ruiz – Shelter Insurance

Edmond Memorial’s Claire Viets

VYPE: What position are you playing and what’s the most difficult thing about it?

Claire Viets: I am playing center forward this season. The most difficult thing about this position is that I am expected to score in every game no matter our opponent, putting a lot of pressure on my performance.

VYPE: What do you love most about your team and teammates at Memorial?

CV: I love how competitive my team is at Memorial. No matter what drill or workout we are doing, each member of the team is pushing to be the best. I love this characteristic because it pushes every one of us to get better and makes our team stronger as a whole.

VYPE: What’s been the biggest improvement in your game so far this season?

CV: My strength has been greatly improved in my game this season. At Memorial we are lifting three days a week every week beginning in September and continuing through season. While this schedule leads to a lot of sore muscles, I recognize myself being more explosive in my movement and stronger on the ball.

VYPE: Who inspires you?

CV: One person that inspires me is my dad. My dad is a very hard worker both in his profession and in his private life. Seeing the drive that my dad has to excel in all areas has motivated me to do the same. I believe the example that he has set for me has shaped me into the person and athlete I am today.

VYPE: Which teammate is the most vocal and which teammate keeps everyone laughing?

CV: McKenzie Pittman is the most vocal and Mia Madden keeps everyone laughing.

VYPE: Favorite subject in school and favorite teacher from any grade?

CV: My favorite subject is math, and my favorite teacher is my AP Calculus teacher, Mrs. Brown.

VYPE: Favorite moment from any season?

CV: Beating Edmond North my sophomore year, crowing us as city champs. The best part about this game was that we were expected to lose, but we tied the game in the second half and later won in penalties, with me and my older sister both making our kicks.

VYPE: What other clubs or groups do you belong to at school?

CV: I play the cello in Symphonic Orchestra and I am a member of National Honor Society.

VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

CV: In my free time I enjoy playing cello or piano and building Legos.

VYPE: What has athletics taught you that you may use later in life?

CV: Athletics has taught me the importance of hard work and how results only come if you push yourself. Athletics also taught me to be a valuable member of a team, helping me understand how I can best lead and support my teammates or surrounding community.
