Choctaw’s Aisha McCool
By Elizabeth Contreras
Choctaw junior Aisha McCool has played soccer since just three years old, and with more than a decade of experience under her belt, she has developed an instinctive feel for the game that shows in the way she reads the field.
Her greatest strength is versatility, moving between multiple positions on both her club and high school team. Shifting between roles has sharpened her soccer IQ, allowing her to anticipate opponents’ decisions and recognize what players want to do with the ball.
“As I have gotten older, I have grown to know the players’ next move,” she said.
One of the biggest areas of growth since last season has been her finishing. McCool spent the summer training, committing time to striking the ball cleanly and working through one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper, focusing on converting the final chance in an attack.
Visible progress in herself, as well as her team, is how she measures success, evident in confidence on the ball and effectively reading the game. Balancing personal expectations with team goals comes down to communication, listening to teammates, understanding shared objectives, and working together to accomplish them.
“I try to understand my teammates’ goals and motives while also understanding my own expectations,” McCool added.
This approach has shaped her role, reinforcing her impact as a teammate and a leader.
As one of the top players in the program, McCool strives to lead by example both on and off the field. During games, she is a constant source of encouragement, lifting her teammates through positive communication. Away from soccer, she remains disciplined and respectful, representing her team with maturity.
McCool balances confidence with humility, staying grounded with the perspective of where she’s been and where she’s going. She also trusts the effort and preparation she has put into her game, knowing she can rely on herself when it matters most.
“Staying grounded for me is about remembering where I started and how far I have come,” she said.
She strives to remain focused on her personal goals while consistently applying the lessons her coaches have taught her along the way.
“I will always trust the effort I put in as a player,” said McCool. “No matter what, I always give 100 percent.”
