Running is taking Baylee Tapley places. This summer, it took her to Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, where she competed in the Nike Outdoor Nationals.
Baylee is a senior at Choctaw High School. She runs cross country and track. She is a mid-distance runner competing in the 800m, 1600m, and 4x8m. She is passionate about running. Baylee thrives on the individual aspect of running while pushing herself as part of a team.
“My favorite part about representing my high school as an athlete is the attachment and belonging it gives me. It motivates me to push harder, knowing that I am running for a program and my team, not just individually. The community you build with is so special. I like how you can clearly see results from the amount of work you put in. It is also a good outlet for me, mentally,” says Baylee.
Last year’s state championship victory in the 3A 1600m is Baylee’s favorite accomplishment in track. The best memories are of her teammates and the lifelong friendships made. “They are like none other,” she says.
The teammate who makes the biggest impression is Paityn Seiger. “She is the most positive person ever and always a bright light in any room. She shows me how to find the best in every situation,” says Baylee.
Baylee’s mom and dad are her inspiration. “They show me what it looks like to truly live a selfless life. They drop anything and everything for me and my siblings, always supporting us no matter what. The best advice anyone has given me is from my mom. ‘Running is something you do and not who you are. When running ends, you have to know who Baylee is,’” she said.
Many people have supported her journey. “Thank you to all my teachers and coaches, especially my trainer Kevin Ondrasek from Thunder Road Running. I truly would not be the runner I am without them. My mom and dad, for spending countless hours driving across the country to make my dreams come true! Also, the rest of my family and friends for always supporting me. They are my biggest fans! I truly have the best support system!” exclaims Baylee.
