Luther Lions – Football Team Preview – Presented by BanFirst Luther-Jones

LUTHER LIONS

Coach: LEVI LUNSFORD

3-7

Luther approaches 2026 with the mindset that last year’s challenges can fuel a breakthrough season. The Lions are a year older, another offseason stronger in the weight room and energized by a move into a new district and class. There is genuine excitement about seeing different teams on the schedule and matching the group’s enthusiasm with improved execution.

Offensively, Luther will base out of 21, 11 and 12 personnel, built around a physical run game and an attack mentality. The Lions want to pound the football, then use play action and screens to attack every level of the field and create favorable matchups. The backfield is loaded with production, as Bo Browning (6-1, 160) returns from a season with 118 carries for 691 yards and four touchdowns, while Maurtice Wright (6-0, 240) added 575 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground. Tight end Gerardo Reyes (6-0, 205) and quarterback Masson Fife (6-3, 180), who threw for 505 yards and three touchdowns, give Luther balance in the passing game, with Kyle Coughran (6-1, 225) and Lucas Raines (6-3, 240) providing size and stability up front.

On defense, the Lions will line up in a 4-2-5 base with an emphasis on playing with great effort and winning the turnover battle. Browning is a standout in the secondary after recording 71 tackles, nine tackles for loss and two sacks, while Reyes returns at defensive end with 38 tackles and eight tackles for loss. Coughran anchors the linebacker group after an 80-tackle season that included 10 tackles for loss and three sacks, and Raines brings strength to the defensive line with 46 tackles and three tackles for loss. Sophomore defensive back Grayson Goyer (5-7, 150), who led the team in interceptions and made 42 tackles, gives Luther a playmaker on the back end.
