For sophomore Grayson Goyer, football is about more than competition. It is about resilience, relationships and learning lessons that extend beyond the field.
Goyer, a 10th-grade defensive back at Luther High School, has already made his mark with standout plays, including a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown — a moment he calls his favorite football memory. “It just felt great to make a big play for the team,” he said.
As a defensive back, Goyer embraces one of the most challenging roles on the field. Tasked with covering receivers, he must rely on speed, awareness and discipline. “The most difficult thing is covering receivers,” he said, noting the constant need to stay focused against opposing offenses.
Despite the intensity of competition, Goyer said the best part of being on the team is the camaraderie. “Being around the guys and having fun with them,” he said. “We have each other’s back and we make each other better.”
That sense of support extends beyond Friday nights. Goyer points to teammate Gerardo Reyes as a major influence. “He’s a leader,” Goyer said, crediting Reyes for setting the tone for the team.

Off the field, Goyer enjoys spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also takes pride in giving back to the community. On game days, he and his teammates visit a local elementary school to help with student drop-off and greet younger students. “We go and say hi to the kids,” he said.
Goyer’s motivation starts at home. He said his parents inspire him the most. “They are always there for me and they both are really hard workers,” he said.
Football has also provided valuable life lessons. “Things are going to be hard, and you can’t give up when it does,” Goyer said, emphasizing perseverance as a key takeaway from athletics. Before each game, Goyer focuses on staying mentally prepared. “I try to relax and get my mind right,” he said.
Among the many moments he has experienced, one stands out for its intensity. Goyer recalled a game where an opposing player passed out after a hit, requiring an ambulance. The incident served as a reminder of the physical nature of the sport.
When he is not on the field, Goyer enjoys spending time in his hometown, especially at Chico’s Mexican Restaurant.
