Loud cheers, splashing and lots of Jaguar roar fill the waters of Westmoore’s swim team. From swimmer to coach to team captain, each of these Jags puts in all the effort in to make great times and aiming for state. At the Swim Meet on Jan. 9th, students performed extraordinarily well across many events.
“We have regionals next month. We’ve done super well this season. We push ourselves every practice with each other,” senior Andrew Trinh said.
Senior Madison Burks, team captain and team player, played a vital role in motivating her team and keeping spirits high. In swim, players compete for best times in backstroke, freestyle and medley, to name a few.
“It felt great when I was named team captain. It felt like a big accomplishment, and motivating my teammates by talking to them really helped. They motivate me, and I motivate them,” Burks said.
Along with beating other school times, players often hype themselves up to beat their own personal times. This self-motivation is highly sought after on this swim team, as it drives players to go above and beyond to make not only coaches Scott Teal and Brent Long proud, but also themselves proud.
“Instead of competing against others, you’re competing against yourself to beat your times. We practice often. We do Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, but I practice by myself outside of that too. My soul motivates me while I swim, I motivate myself,” Trinh said.
