Every athlete is different. From when they get involved in a sport, to what motivates them to compete, there are a wide variety of reasons student-athletes make the decision to practice long hours, push themselves academically and sacrifice some of the social aspects of high school to ensure they are ready when it’s time to compete. Moore High School’s Jaxson Wheeler is now a senior and competing for the varsity track team.
“I started in the seventh grade,” Wheeler said. “I compete in the 4×800, 800-meters, 1600-meters, and the 4×400 relay.”
This season Wheeler has worked to lower his times and be a threat in his events.
“I have improved my 1600-meter time by changing my mindset and running smart, also listening to my coaches,” said Wheeler.
Staying disciplined has been key for Wheeler. Music helps him mentally prepare for each race, but the support he receives is a driving force.
“The support from my family, friends, coaches, and other athletes from different schools has helped me grow and want to improve my times,” said Wheeler.
Wheeler loves being around his teammates and what they do to help each other compete. The same can be said for MHS.
“I love that we can always have fun and laugh. Not be too serious,” Wheeler said. “MHS teachers have really made high school great. Also have great coaches that listen to you and help guide you has made MHS a great school.”
Wheeler will take his talents to Rogers State University in Claremore, OK next fall where he plans to compete in cross country and track while earning a degree in Cybersecurity.
