Norman North’s Rocky Moore – Football Coach Spotlight – Presented by Brian McPherson, Shelter Insurance

Norman North’s Rocky Moore

By Mike Moguin

Now entering his seventh season as an assistant on the Norman North football coaching staff, Rocky Moore holds several titles, including quarterbacks coach, co-offensive coordinator, and, most recently, associate head coach.

As the coach of the game’s most pivotal position, he’ll tell you that playing quarterback is a privilege.

“To be successful at this position comes down to specific characteristics,” Moore said. “You have to be a great processor, you have to be a great leader and communicator, and you also have to be tough both physically and mentally.”

Moore has been around sports all his life. He grew up as a coach’s kid due to being a basketball coach at the high school and junior college levels. You can find him at the scorer’s table, keeping stats for both girls’ and boys’ games during the Timberwolves’ hardwood campaign. “It is neat because I get to stay connected to the game of basketball by doing that,” Moore said.

Moore also teaches a test prep course for the ACT and SAT, and helps the school in an assistant AD role during the spring for sports like baseball and soccer

“Shout out to both our girls’ and boys’ soccer teams for being state champs this last year,” he said. Moore also does some quarterback training on the side here and there.

Three quarterbacks now playing at the NCAA D-I level have been coached by Moore at Norman North – Gavin Frakes (Northwestern), Kamden Sixkiller (Campbell), and Owen Eshelman (Washington State).

“The awesome thing about these kids is that they are all different in so many ways, but possess the qualities I mentioned earlier,” Moore said. “They have shaped me into the coach I am today, and I have learned bits and pieces along the way from each one of those young men.”

Currently, Moore is working with senior, and University of Washington commit Mason James, whom he says has been phenomenal to work with.

“Mason is such a joy to be around,” Moore said. “He is so dangerous with the ball in his hands, very impressive, and has a high football IQ. But more than anything, he is a kid who is a blast to be around. He constantly puts a smile on people’s faces and goes the extra mile, which is why it is not surprising that he has put himself in the position that he is in now.”

Daily operations of the program, relationships with the student-athletes, watching the school grow, and working with an “amazing” staff are among the things Moore has enjoyed while representing Norman North.

“It is an absolute joy to work with the football program at Norman North,” Moore said. “I would say this is a credit to Coach (Justin) Jones and the way he goes about his job day in and day out. The head coach sets the table for the culture in the program, and he is one of the best. We are all fortunate to get to work for a man like him.”
