Purcell’s Ava Sparks – Softball Spotlight – Presented by Abby Sizelove Shelter Insurance

As Purcell High School senior pitcher Ava Sparks gets ready for her final season with the Dragons, she is focused on leaving a lasting impact built on energy, positivity and trust. At the center of that approach is the tight-knit group around her. “I love that we have such a good relationship and bond. We have the type of players that have each others back on and off the field.”

That support system starts at home. Sparks says her parents are the ones who set the standard for her work ethic and attitude. “My parents inspire me by pushing me to be the best I can be in all situations.” On the field, she channels that motivation into the circle, where she controls the pace of the game. “I play primarily pitcher and the thing I enjoy most about my position is having control of the game and my change up.”

Summer has been busy as Purcell prepares for the upcoming season. “Summer work outs are going good; Coach Harwell is good at what he does and Coach Tompkins/Coach Knowles do a great job at supporting the team. I do play travel ball our last tournament will be in Florida, and we will enjoy one last week as a team.” Sparks is also involved on campus beyond softball, saying, “I am in student council and honor society.”

She points to former senior pitcher Ella Resendiz as a teammate who helped shape her game when she first arrived at Purcell. “Ella Resendiz was the senior pitcher the year I moved to Purcell, and she was very encouraging and motivational. She pushed me to be a better pitcher.” That influence helped her grow through a challenging season. “We didn’t have our best season last year, but I learn that if I keep my energy and positivity up the team will follow.”

Now a senior, Sparks is looking ahead as well as inside the circle. “I am a senior this year and my goal is to become a physical therapist.” On the mound, she leans on her ability to move the ball and hit spots. “My strength is my spin and hitting spots, but I am working on improving my speed and gaining strength.”
