Purcell’s Kaylin Vazquez
Shortstop Kaylin Vazquez has built her reputation at Purcell High School on defense, leadership and a deep appreciation for the mental side of softball. A multi-sport athlete and campus leader, she has emerged as one of the Dragons’ most dependable infielders and competitors.
Vazquez anchors the infield at shortstop, a position she embraces for its constant demands and split-second decisions. She prides herself on reading runners, anticipating bunts and knowing where the next two plays will develop before each pitch. “I play shortstop, I feel like the toughest thing about the spot is being constantly aware of the game in every aspect,” Vazquez said.
Defense remains her strength, a part of her game she describes as consistently reliable. At the same time, she is working to become a more complete offensive player by focusing on quality at-bats and putting the ball in play instead of chasing home runs. Her goal is to reach base consistently and deliver well-placed hits that keep innings alive.
Vazquez draws inspiration from a wide circle that includes her mother, former teammates and coaches who care about both the game and the person. They have helped shape her mindset to play with all-out effort, move on quickly from mistakes and remember that softball does not define her identity. One teammate’s lesson — that her athletic ability is only part of who she is — has stayed with her on and off the field.
Away from softball, Vazquez plays basketball and stays heavily involved in student organizations. She is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as an officer in National Honor Society, Student Council and Spanish Club. Those roles have reinforced what athletics has already taught her: that consistency and effort will always beat money and talent.
“If you don’t work hard at something and you just go off the everyday one-hour practice but don’t work at it after that, you will always be what you work for,” Vazquez said. “Effort is working at something with all your heart.”
