Q&A with Norman North’s Mason James

By Bryce McKinnis

VYPE: How do you expect to back up a junior season in which you had over 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns?

Mason James: Work and train harder than I did last year and take advantage of my opportunities.

VYPE: What do you believe makes you unique as an athlete?

MJ: The way I carry myself on the field and the way I play the game and the abilities that I have with the ball.

VYPE: What’s one thing about Mason James that everybody should know?

MJ: I’m a barber in my free time and like to spend time with family and friends and a follower of Christ.

VYPE: What’s your “why?”

MJ: My why is my family, how much they’ve poured into me while they have so much going on in life. They’ve put their last and everything into me. I want to make it to where they don’t have to worry about anything again and be able to take care of them.

VYPE: What are some of the things that come with being a four-star athlete that many people may not know?

MJ: Just as much support you get is not near the hate and criticism you’re going to get, and all eyes will always be on you.

VYPE: How have your teammates helped you reach the success you’ve had in your career?

MJ: They always push me hard in practice and when we workout just making me the best person and teammate I can be and also there for me when I need.

VYPE: You held offers from schools like OU, Mizzou and Arizona State. Why was Washington ultimately the right choice?

MJ: The way they treated me and my family and ultimately the way that I fit it with their offensive scheme and the way I can be used in their offense and get me ready for the NFL. It’s also like a family there.

VYPE: What has the game of football taught you about yourself?

MJ: That I’m always gonna keep wanting more no matter what I achieve and that I have a competitiveness about me and drive.

VYPE: Where do you see yourself in four years?

MJ: Being the top receiver in college football or maybe even headed to the draft and being the person my little brothers can look up to and also the person that’s helping their family out.
