The Southmoore SaberCats took down the Westmoore Jaguars in a highly anticipated rivalry game, securing a 64-51 victory behind a dominant performance from sophomore guard Tyson Pogi (6-1, So.). The game started with Southmoore controlling the tempo, and despite Westmoore’s efforts to mount a comeback, the SaberCats maintained their lead through all four quarters.
First Quarter: Southmoore Sets the Tone
Southmoore came out firing, jumping to a commanding 20-9 lead after the first quarter. Pogi was unstoppable early, scoring 12 points on perfect shooting, while Joey Folsom (5-11, So.) and Kolton Brammer (6-1, Jr.) added key baskets. Westmoore struggled to find rhythm offensively, with twins Grant Barnard (6-2, Sr.) and Garrett Barnard (6-2, Sr.) accounting for all but one of the team’s points, scoring four each. Second Quarter: Westmoore Responds
The Jaguars found their groove in the second quarter, cutting Southmoore’s lead to just five points at halftime, 32-27. Garrett Barnard led the charge with 11 points, showing his ability to score from all over the court. His counterpart, Grant Barnard, also had a strong quarter, tallying 10 points to fuel Westmoore’s offensive surge. Southmoore, however, remained efficient, with Pogi continuing his hot streak, scoring 16 first-half points.
Third Quarter: Southmoore Holds Firm
Westmoore continued to push in the third quarter, but Southmoore maintained control, taking a 48-41 lead into the final frame. Pogi was the difference-maker again, scoring 24 points through three quarters, while Brammer and G. Willingham provided key support. Westmoore’s Garrett Barnard kept his team in the game with 16 points, while Grant Barnard added 15. However, Southmoore’s ability to execute offensively and maintain defensive intensity prevented the Jaguars from gaining any momentum.
Fourth Quarter: Southmoore Closes It Out
Despite Westmoore’s best efforts, Southmoore pulled away in the final quarter, outscoring the Jaguars 16-10 to seal the 64-51 win. Pogi finished with a game-high 31 points, demonstrating why he’s one of the top players in the region. Brammer (12 points) and Willingham (6 points) also played key roles in Southmoore’s offensive success. Westmoore’s Garrett Barnard and Grant Barnard each finished with 17 points, while Finn Frisby (6-1, Sr.) chipped in seven.
Southmoore’s efficiency proved to be the deciding factor, as they shot a perfect 21-for-21 from the free-throw line and remained composed throughout the game. Meanwhile, Westmoore’s valiant comeback attempt fell short, but their resilience was evident.
