Athlete Spotlight with Southmoore’s Gavin Elmore – Presented by Kristy Freeman-Shelter Insurance

When Southmoore High School’s Gavin Elmore competes this season, it will be in his final season as a Sabercat.

The senior is focused on golf and academics and while one may come before the other, Elmore, like every other golfer, is finding the time to get better and help his team win.

“My strength is ball striking, ball striking is what I improved on most this season,” said Elmore.

But the senior admits, finding a balance between the two can be difficult.

“My biggest challenge is balancing schoolwork with golf,” Elmore said. “Southmoore is a great place because it allows me to take online classes so I can practice more during school hours.”

The support from the school and parents is everything to Elmore. He said they have sacrificed to help get him to where he is today.

“Their support means a lot, my parents have sacrificed a lot to put me in the position I am,” said Elmore.

Elmore said his teammates support each other and push to make everyone better.

“I love the bond our team shares. Everyone is rooting for each other, and it is a comedic group. I am not sure who I would say inspires me, but my good friend Ayden Benab helps push me to become a better player and I appreciate that,” said Elmore.

In his free time, Elmore said he likes to play golf with friends and make some friendly wagers on the course.

“I like to play money games with guys on the golf course because it gives you an added pressure that can only be replicated by tournament golf,” said Elmore.

When his time at SHS comes to an end, the senior said he is looking forward to starting the next chapter of his life.

“I am going to get my degree at USAO while playing golf there and I wish to become a detective one day. I will have to be a police officer for around 5-10 years before becoming a detective I believe,” said Elmore.
