Franklin Coats is an up-and-coming young football player ready to make an impact on his team. He is a sophomore who earned a spot to play on the Southmoore High School varsity football team. The opportunity to play varsity is currently his career high as a football player. He enjoys being around everyone on his team and is passionate about the sport he has dedicated himself to.

“My favorite memory was just playing with our defense this year,” he said, “I’ve always wanted to be a good athlete and successful in my sport so that drives me to do well.”

Of the many lessons Coats learned while playing football, never missing an opportunity is one of the most important.

“If you get your chance, don’t take it for granted,” he says.

Coats is proud to represent his school as an athlete. The best way to do this is through his actions on the field. He is mindful of his role as an athlete, and said he, “always remembering not to do something dumb that will cause trouble on the field.”

Learning from teammates is an important part of playing on a team. Sometimes a player’s actions off the field have an impact that makes them someone to look up to.

“Joe Dover was a senior we had, who wasn’t able to play this year. His mom underwent surgery out of state, and he went with her for support. He showed me that even though he loved football, he had to support his mom,” Coats said.

Coats is inspired by his dad, who has pushed and encouraged him to keep going in sports. He also appreciates his coach for teaching him the game.

“Thank you, Coach Littlehead, for a great year of football. You taught me life and football skills. It was a great year with you,” he said.

Coats is also an avid baseball player. His most memorable vacation was playing baseball in Arizona. Playing another game he loves and seeing the Grand Canyon made the trip one he will always remember. After high school, he wants to continue playing sports and is interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
