Washington’s Creed Barrett

By Ivy Knapp

Washington football player, Creed Barrett, has grown up around the sport. He still remembers the moment that pulled him toward football.

“I started playing football in 3rd grade, and I used to watch my dad’s highlights when I was little,” he said. “That really is what made me want to play.”

Now a quarterback, Creed loves the responsibility that comes with the position. He says the best part is being in a position to lead and make a play every snap. Game days are always exciting, but some of his favorite moments don’t even happen under the Friday night lights.                                                                                 “Either going and getting to read to my kindergarten class every Friday, or right after we score and our fans go nuts and blow the air horns,” Creed said. Those moments make football feel special to him.

Before big games, Creed leans heavily on his faith.

“I prepare my mind by listening to Christian music and praying,” he said. “I just try to remind myself of who I play for and remember that in everything I do on and off the field I need to glorify God.”

Staying grounded can be tough, and he admits one of his biggest challenges has been being able to stay strong in my faith with the music and language that football brings to the table.

His dad has had the biggest impact on his football journey, but one of his most meaningful memories came with another family member. He still remembers taking a knee to win the state championship his freshman year and his older cousin sprinting up to him shouting, wedid it.

“It was a very emotional moment and something we had dreamed about doing since we could walk basically,” Creed said.

School has always been a big part of his life.

“My parents always made me do homework as soon as I walked in the door,” he said.

He says that discipline keeps him balanced now. Math is his favorite subject, and team chemistry is something he’s proud of. He’s inspired most by teammate Riley Gay, who has battled adversity ever since they were little. His goal this season is the ultimate one.

“Winning another state title.” Creed said.
