Incoming freshmen have a lot going on. It’s their first year being around upperclassmen, but for student-athletes there is an additional pressure to compete well enough to make a varsity roster. Westmoore High School’s Lily West did that with the tennis team and it’s an accomplishment she is proud of making.
“I’m a ninth grader and I started playing tennis in the sixth grade,” said West. “I’m most proud of making the varsity tennis team my freshman year. It was a significant achievement that required a lot of hard work and dedication.”
Playing doubles with a partner has been a great experience according to West. She has learned a lot this season and continues to push herself to get better.
“My strengths or best shots are my volleys. At the beginning of the year, they were just okay, but they’ve improved to become my go-to shot,” said West.
But the journey is not without its challenges.
“The biggest challenge for high school athletes is finding time to rest. Balancing practice with studies and homework can be tough, so I often do my work during downtime. Staying up late is a common occurrence for me,” said West.
West also points out that the coaches provide the players with great advice on managing time and life around sports.
“Westmoore provides excellent leadership and encouragement. The coaches foster team unity, which is why Westmoore is an excellent school for athletes,” said West.
West is all-in for Westmoore tennis and her teammates.
“What I love most about my teammates is their unwavering support. Regardless of the outcome of a match, they cheer each other on for their performance, not just their win,” said West.
The freshman hopes to one day play tennis at the collegiate level.“I’m considering interior design and hopefully I will be able to play tennis where I attend.”
