Westmoore High School senior Isaac Chavez has competed in cross country for five years. During that time, he has seen and competed in many venues across Oklahoma. Like many competitors, Chavez has his favorites.
“My most favorite memory was running coach Dakota Kappelle’s Milk Mile and trying to survive. It was day 1600 of his nonstop running streak. So, I said to him, “we should do a milk mile to celebrate your achievement!” He was all in. We even got shirts for participating and completing the run,” said Chavez.
Surviving a milk mile is one thing, but to compete consistently over a high school career means you are dedicated to the sport. This season Chavez has even surprised himself.
“The Jags Jamboree was the second race of the season, and I was underestimating myself, thinking I was barely gonna run sub 17, but I shocked myself and the coaches by going 16:11. Really showed how prepared my body is for this season,” said Chavez.
Chavez said his teammates and his coaches are what make being a student-athlete at WHS special. Some of the teammates are known for keeping everyone loose and relaxed.
“The Coaches not only push us to achieve higher peaks as an athlete, but they push us to excel in our academic performance which encourages us and equips us with the abilities to understand the skills that can be used for personal and professional life,” Chavez said. “Isaac Forman makes everyone laugh by cracking a quick joke either to us or the coaches. I’m probably the most serious on the team just to make sure nobody injures themselves.”
As for his future, Chavez would like to continue competing in college. “My main goal is to get into a good college and eventually achieving a successful career. Second goal by being the best version of myself and “Always share a smile, because you never know who’s having a bad day.”
