Ranked in the Top 10 this season, Westmoore volleyball enjoyed a great season on the court and a trip to the state tournament. One of their players, Morgan Cross, is a junior and plays outside hitter and middle blocker. Cross started her volleyball journey at an early age.
“I started playing volleyball at the age of 10, so I have been playing for about seven years,” Cross said. “My favorite memory or moment as a player for Westmoore was winning Regionals for the first time ever in Westmoore’s program history.”
Cross was instrumental in helping the team advance to the state tournament. It was her point that won the match, advancing the team forward.
“The feeling was honestly amazing. I really was in disbelief after we won, and it took a whole day to figure out how big it actually was to win that point and that game,” Cross said.
“The other team served the ball, and my libero Katelyn Stevenson gave an amazing pass to Ana Chavez who set me the ball. I hit it down the line and tooled the block to get a first ball kill on the point.”
Cross is quick to point out that it takes a team to win, and she loves her teammates at WHS.
“The teammate that impressed me the most this season was definitely Naomi Perkins. Her ability to jump and hit is incredible. She is only a sophomore, but no one would know that by watching her play,” Cross said. “The teammate that keeps everyone laughing is Vinna Geh. She is hilarious and always knows how to lighten the mood. The most serious teammate is probably Olivia Branum. When she is on the court she knows how to lock in and get her job done. I love that me and my teammates always have each other’s backs, and we really are one big family that enjoys hanging out together and having fun.”
Preparing for competition is something Cross takes very serious.
“I mentally prepare myself for competition by watching film on other teams and just making sure I know what I need to do going into a game,” said Cross.
Only a junior, Cross is making plans for life after high school.
“After high school I would love to continue my athletic career and play college volleyball,” said Cross.
