In only their second season on the mat, the Mount St. Mary Rockets under head coach Jake Webb, are making big strides in the development of the program. Coach Webb said despite the program being new, the team features some talented wrestlers who are growing and improving with every match.
“The Mount Wrestling program is still very new. This is our second year as a program. We compete in 3A currently. Next year will be our first year in with a district schedule that we are looking forward to as we grow and build what we have going. We have a lot of very young talent that is looking forward to helping Mount St. Mary get our name out there as someone who can compete with anyone,” said coach Webb.
Cord Brown (So.) is one of those young and talented wrestlers the program is excited to have on the mat. Coach Webb said Brown has been there since day one. As a freshman, Brown was voted team captain by his peers. A huge accomplishment in your first year of high school.
“He has bumped up weight when needed for duals and is one of our most consistent guys. We can really count on Cord when we need team points or a big pin. He brings a different kind of energy and confidence once he steps on the mat. Whoever is across from him know they’re in for a physical match once they lock up,” said coach Webb.
Leadership is important and thanks to a transfer, the Rockets may have it in Donald Sanders (So.). Sanders has wrestled since he was in elementary school and was a three-time youth champion.
“So far he has medaled in every tournament so far this year getting two silver medals and a 4th place finish at our last tournament. Only being a sophomore, he has such a huge ceiling to what he can do for the team and achieve individually,” said coach Webb.
Jenner Flint (Fr.) has entered the wrestling room and made an immediate impact according to coach Webb.
“He’s still young and learning, but the strides he’s taking in his wrestling has shown on the mats during competition as he’s started to collect multiple wins. We expect him to be one of our most consistent guys,” said Webb.
Another wrestler to watch is Connor Gracey. New to wrestling, Gracey has committed himself to getting better and learning as much as he can in a short time. Coach Webb says Gracey stands out thanks to his willingness to learn and be a great teammate.
“Always has a great attitude towards anything I have thrown at him. He has been putting in extra conditioning and work to pull weight without even asking. Great teammate as he’s always on the edge of the mat supporting the guys. Never have to worry about him having any grade issues,” said Webb.
As the season moves forward, look for the Rockets to continue improving and finding their way to the podium at area tournaments.
