Inspired by his parents and motivated by his teammates, Heritage Hall’s Denton Suthers is one of the top guards for the Chargers this season. Last year Suthers accounted for 7.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals a game.
“My favorite thing about my team at Heritage Hall would have to be the togetherness we have on and off the court. We have really bought into our coach’s advice this year of trusting each other, and in games, it shows because we all know everyone’s going to be there for each other, even when the game isn’t going our way at times,” said Suthers. “The people who inspire me are my parents because of their work ethic. They work their hardest to give me all the opportunities to succeed. Therefore, it’s instilled a work ethic in me that pushes me to give all I have for my team.”
Coming into the season, Suthers knew there were areas he wanted to improve, and that was the focus in the off-season and early practices.
“The biggest improvement in my game coming into the new season would have to be having the most efficient shot selection because if you take shots that aren’t a high percentage, then it’s the equivalent of turning it over to me,” Suthers said.
Having the ability to play multiple positions makes Suthers a type of utility player for coach Dylan Sullivan.
“This season I am playing the 1, 2, 3, and 4 for our team. The hardest part about playing such a diverse role is learning how to effectively move off-ball in the post, just because I’ve never played it in my career,” Suthers said.
Basketball isn’t the only thing Suthers is involved in at Heritage Hall. A member of the track team, Suthers competes in the 4X400 and the 300-meter hurdles. He’s also a member of the Lego Club. His favorite course involves design work.
“My favorite subject in school would be metal design. My favorite teacher would have to be Ms. Nickel, because she has the most positive energy and encourages me to be creative in all my projects,” Suthers said.
As for life on the court, Suthers said he loves being with his teammates and he has made some great memories on the court.
“The most vocal teammate would be Tyler Butler, and the funniest teammate would be Rhett Davis,” said Suthers. “My favorite moment from any season would be going out and eating with our team and going to college basketball games.”
Being a student-athlete has taught Suthers many lessons he will use throughout his life.
“Athletics has taught me to give my all into everything I do because hard work will always give the best results. No matter what you want to accomplish, I believe if you put it in God’s hands and give it 100 percent you will succeed,” Suthers said.
