Heritage Hall freshman Lexy “Doodle” Willis is stepping into high school volleyball with a veteran mindset and a clear sense of where she wants the game to take her. A libero, defensive specialist and setter for the Lady Chargers, Willis is already embracing the challenge of joining an established program and finding her voice on a roster filled with experienced players and club-tested freshmen.
“One thing that I really love about the volleyball community at Heritage Hall is that they are very welcoming being a freshman coming in to play with girls who are already experienced in Heritage Hall high school volleyball was definitely something new and intimidating at first, but the coaching staff and upperclassmen never fail to make me feel like I belong. I Love my TEAM! I am excited to be a Charger and fight for the state Championship over the next 4 years.”
That blend of excitement and ambition is rooted in a family steeped in the sport. Willis draws daily motivation from her mother, a standout who earned a place in the Oklahoma State Hall of Honor, played for Team USA and competed professionally. “One person that inspires me is my mom. She is in the Hall of Honor at Oklahoma State, Played for Team USA and played professionally. She was an amazing athlete and that made her an even more exceptional mom and person. I look up to her in a lot of ways and I love that she is always there for me. She inspires me to be a great person and a relentless volleyball player with the elite skills and mindset that she has instilled in me since I was little.”
Willis said she thrives in Heritage Hall’s demanding practice environment, where accountability is a daily expectation and the freshman-heavy roster leans on strong club résumés. “Currently, I am a libero/Ds/Setter for my high school. I love how the setup of practices really push you to be better at heritage hall. the coaches demand accountability and I love that. We have a lot of freshmen, but everyone has solid club experience at a high level, and everyone works hard and so well together.”
Her development has also been shaped by club teammate Collins Molloy, with whom she is entering a third year on the same team. “I have a teammate on my club team named Collins Molloy. Now going into my third year playing on the same team with her, she has helped me become a better player, person, and is an amazing friend.”
Looking ahead, Willis is chasing a path through the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program and, eventually, a spot with Team USA as a libero while targeting a high-level college program. She plans to major in business and one day help run her family’s Jersey Mike’s Subs locations while continuing to play professionally as long as she can. Through it all, she leans on the lessons that came from adversity as much as from success, including a club national championship run that she said was built long before the final point was scored.
