Mount St. Mary’s Will Grayson
Mount St. Mary senior Will Grayson has learned that the most important pitch is always the next one. The left-hander anchors the Rockets’ varsity baseball staff with a calm, competitive presence on the mound and a mindset he calls a “Pitch One” mentality.
Grayson’s primary position is pitcher, though he also enjoys using his athleticism in the infield. He said the toughest part of pitching is staying focused when adversity hits, and he works hard to treat every pitch like a fresh start. “The most challenging part of pitching is staying focused and locked in when things don’t go your way,” Grayson said. “Having a ‘Pitch One’ mentality allows me to approach every pitch with a fresh mindset, unaffected by the pitch before it.”
Accuracy is the foundation of his game. Grayson said he prides himself on locating all three of his pitches and being a pitcher, not just a thrower. “Pitch location is the key to getting outs,” he said, adding that he wants to give his team a chance to win every time he takes the mound.
As he heads into his senior season, Grayson is focused on becoming a more consistent threat at the plate. He described himself as a solid hitter whose production has fluctuated, and he is determined to be one of the toughest outs in the lineup. “In my senior season, I’m working to have a great year in all aspects of the game,” Grayson said.
Grayson said the growth of Mount St. Mary’s program over his four years is one of the things he values most. He believes the Rockets have become a more disciplined, confident group with a shared goal of competing for a state title. “As teammates, we have worked through challenges, built real friendships, and become a much more disciplined group,” he said. “As a team, we’re locked in on our goal of competing for a state title.”
Athletics, Grayson said, has taught him lessons that extend far beyond baseball. He points to teamwork, leadership and handling pressure as skills that will carry into his life after high school. “Pressure is a privilege, and I love going to the mound with the responsibility of holding a team scoreless,” he said. “The ability to stay calm and compete in high-pressure moments is a skill that will help me long after baseball.”
Grayson credits his parents and his younger brother, Sam, for much of his motivation. Sam is also his teammate at Mount St. Mary, and the two often share the infield together. “Having my brother, Sam Grayson, as a teammate at Mount St. Mary’s is an added blessing and a constant source of motivation,” Will said. “Sam is one of the hardest working guys I know, and he pushes me to be my best every day.”
Grayson said he plays with a chip on his shoulder, fueled by moments when he has been overlooked. But he is not trying to chase doubters. “I’m not trying to prove everyone wrong; I’m just focused on proving myself right through my work ethic and consistency,” he said.
