US Grant’s Abby Combs – Athlete Spotlight

Head coach Stormy Griffith continues to build a culture of working hard to achieve goals at US Grant High School. Abby Combs is a senior combo guard playing for coach Griffith. This year Combs was selected as a VYPE Top 100 player and is competing for the title of Miss Basketball Oklahoma this season.

“Abby was a 6A All-District player who averaged 13 points per game. She was named to the Little Axe All-Tournament Team and was the OKCPS Tournament MVP,” coach Griffith said.

Putting in the hard work is something Combs loves to do and to be with her teammates makes it that much more enjoyable.

“I love how hard my team works every day in practice to get better and my teammates are normally very coachable. My favorite moment was winning the All-City, All-Conference tournament my junior year,” Combs said.

The senior said she finds inspiration in a family member and her coach.

“Leroy Combs, my uncle, inspires me to continue the greatness he worked so hard for,” said Combs. “Despite coach Griff’s losing record when I came in, she knows what she’s doing as a coach.”

Combs admits she’s probably the most vocal player on the team, but teammate Riah McDowell keeps everyone laughing. Combs said she continues to work on her game.

“My strength in the game is my awareness and basketball IQ. I need to work on my body language when I get frustrated,” said Combs. “I’m looking forward to continuing to work hard this season and improve as a team and individually.”

In the classroom, Combs said it was a teacher who helped her develop a love for the game.

“My favorite subject is math, and my favorite teacher was my middle school PE teacher, Doug Thomas, who nurtured my love for basketball through his coaching,” Combs said.

In her free time, Combs said she enjoys getting shots up, working on fundamentals, and breaking down film.
