NEWCASTLE RACERS
BOYS
COACH: Jessie Brown
2023 Record: 20-9
The Newcastle Racers enter the 2024 season with high expectations after an impressive 20-9 campaign last year, narrowly missing back-to-back state tournament appearances by just one point. Despite losing standout player Bobby Burrell Jr. to graduation, head coach Jessie Brown is confident his team is ready to take the next step.
“We’re returning everyone except Bobby, and we’re led by seniors Antonio Brown and Zach Cragg,” Brown said. “This group is looking to make a lot of noise in 4A this year.”
Antonio Brown (6-0, Sr., PG) returns as the team’s leader after averaging 16.0 points per game last season, including a career-high 30-point performance. “Antonio is a strong point guard with a high IQ who can shoot it,” said Brown. “He’s got an offer from SCU, and he’s going to be a big part of what we do this season.”
Zach Cragg (6-2, Sr., G/F) is another key senior, providing versatility and leadership on both ends of the floor. Coach Brown is also excited about freshman Cole Seely (6-1, Fr., G/F), who is already one of the top 2028 prospects in Oklahoma. “Cole has a chance to be one of the top players when it’s all said and done,” Brown said.
The Racers blend experienced seniors with talented underclassmen, creating a balanced team with the potential to compete at the highest level. Last year’s near miss at the state tournament has only fueled their hunger to improve and push for a deeper postseason run.
This team has the pieces to be successful. The Racers are focused on taking it one game at a time and making every opportunity count.
