OUTLOOK
The cupboards are full at Southwest Covenant as head coach Kevin Cobbs prepares his team for the new season. With several returning players and an emphasis on staying healthy, the Patriots are on the cusp of having a season to remember.
“We have a lot of experience and talent coming back from last year’s team. We lost one starter off that team who made it to the second round of Area last season. We’ve added some serious depth at guard and look to put up some big numbers offensively. We can easily play 12 guys with very little drop from one player to the next. This is a really fun group to coach as they have a high IQ for basketball. If we stay healthy, it should be a fun season with another good run in the playoffs,” said coach Cobbs.
Tripp Niles (6-5, Jr.) and Gunner Starnes (6-7, Jr.) are leading the way at forward. Niles averaged 18 points a game with 5.0 rebounds while shooting 39% from three-point land. Starnes pitched in 13 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. Both guys are inside/outside players. Starnes shot 68% from the field and both are being recruited by local school.
Lyndon Behymer (6-2, Jr.) averaged 10 points while shooting 40% from the three-point line. Behymer will play guard with Mustang HS transfer Brady Robertson (6-2, Jr.) joining him in the backcourt. Nathan Gerber (6-2, Sr.) is an exciting forward who averaged 7.0 points and 8.0 rebounds a game.
Other players to watch include Asher Hoover (6-2, Sr.) at forward, Max Horton (6-2, Sr.) at forward, Brody Kufahl (6-1, Jr.) at guard, Caden Cobbs (5-10, Jr.) at guard, Preston Ortiz (5-9, Jr.) at guard, Luke Kern (6-0, Jr.) at forward, Ar’Tavious Hess (5-10, So.) at guard, Cason Couser (5-11, So.) at guard, Zac Chandler (5-9, Fr.) at guard, and Evan Beshears (6-2, Fr.) at forward.
