OUTLOOK
Everyone knows the expectations when you play for the Varnum Lady Whippets and head coach Jon Hadley. This program has a reputation of being one of the best and after a misstep last season, the team is ready to get back to the state tournament. This team is the fourth winningest girls basketball program in Oklahoma over the past 10 seasons. After a seven-year consecutive state tournament appearance streak, the Lady Whippets fell just short of yet another state appearance.
“We suffered knee injuries in key spots in the second semester last year but hope to get some of those injured returning players back incrementally during this season. We will not be as talented as we have been over the several years, but if we can get healthy and stay healthy, we will be looking at another good season. Losing All-Stater Hailey Mack to graduation, we will be expecting players to step up and replace her scoring,” said coach Hadley.
Maegan Wildcat (5-1, Sr.) is an outstanding guard who averaged 9.2 points with 3.1 steals a game. Her return to the court will give the Lady Whippets someone who can score and play great defense. Katherine Morgan (5-7, Sr.) is a dependable forward and leader. Morgan understands the game and does all the little thing to help her team win. Last season she averaged 6.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals per contest.
Also look for Ashlyn White-Richards (5-6, So.) at guard and Shysie Harjo (5-6, Sr.) at guard. Both can average over five points a game and play defense. Raylin Gee (5-6, Jr.) and Jenna Lofton (5-8, Jr.) will see quality minutes this season giving coach Hadley a nice rotation. Other players to watch include Makayla Louie (5-7, Fr.) at guard, Miley Wildcat (5-8, So.) at forward, and Jazmyn Williams (5-8, So.) at guard. Williams is a long guard who is ready to step up and play a larger role for the Lady Whippets.
