OUTLOOK
Competing at a high level has become the norm for the Whippets of Varnum High School thanks to head coach Jon Hadley. The team is focused on making another run at a state title.
“After a run to the state tournament last season, we were primarily a sophomore and junior laden team. With the experience and the maturity that all the returning pieces have gained in the past year, plus the addition of a good freshman class, that includes freshman standout Daison Hadley, we look to have an even better season this upcoming season,” said coach Hadley.
CJ Benard (6-4, Sr.) is a VYPE Top 100 selectee and someone who averaged 13 points with 3.9 rebounds per game. Benard plays a guard/forward hybrid position and is comfortable playing inside or on the perimeter. Kylan Mack (5-11, Sr.) is an exciting guard who averaged 15 points and 2.9 assists per game. Mack hit the 1,000-point club last season.
Jon Madkins (6-6, Jr.) is a gamechanger on both ends of the court. Madkins averaged 8.5 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting 53 percent from the field. Ruben Zapata (5-11, Sr.) and Trenton Mack (6-0, Jr.) are two forwards looking to get into the scoring action. Zapata averaged 4.8 points and shot 76 percent from the free throw line, while Mack averaged 6.1 points and shot 81 percent from the free throw line.
Other players to watch include Devyn Fullbright (5-9, Jr.), Christian Brager (6-2, Jr.), Daison Hadley (5-10, Fr.), and Adrian “AV” Vigil. Hadley is a scoring point guard and comes into the program with high expectations.
