Athlete Spotlight with Norman North’s Carlyn Utley – Presented by Vision Bank

As Norman North High School junior Carlyn Utley progresses her way through her second season of softball this year, her focus is on winning, but maintaining a high GPA is the priority.

“I am most proud of sustaining a 4.0 GPA throughout my academic career,” Utley said. “I plan to attend college, get a job, and have a family.”

Utley plays both slow-pitch in the spring and fastpitch in the fall. She said playing both allows her to get more work in and prepare for the long fastpitch season.

“In slow-pitch I play outfield and in fastpitch I player pitcher, catcher, and first,” Utley said. “It helps me continue to get more reps and improve during the offseason.”

At the age of four, Utley started playing softball and has never looked back. Her passion for the game and her teammates is obvious.

“I love that we don’t let outside noise effect how we play and how we feel about ourselves. We focus on what we can control, and we have each other’s backs and that is what really matters,” said Utley.

However, life is not without its challenges, and she is grateful for the support she receives.

“My biggest challenge is balancing academics, athletics, as well as a social life,” Utley said. “The support means everything. It motivates me to keep working and give my all, on and off the field.”

Utley said her parents are a source of inspiration and before a game she likes to focus and set some goals.“My parents inspire me the most. They work hard to provide for our family and are always looking out for us,” Utley said. “My biggest asset is staying calm at the plate or in the circle. It is important to not get too high or too low. I like to focus on the things I can control and set some goals for what I plan to accomplish before each game.”
