Winning a state title changed everything for Community Christian golfer Carter Box, but it also sharpened how he sees himself on the course. “Winning state last year,” Box said, when asked what accomplishment he is most proud of.
Now a junior and the No. 2 bag for the Royals, he leans into the mental side of the game. “You can always count on yourself,” he said of what golf has taught him. That mindset fuels the confidence he brings to his team. “I feel like I bring confidence when it comes to golf because I trust myself,” Box said.
Supportive voices have helped shape his journey. “Mrs Bell. She is the best, she understands her students,” he said of his favorite teacher. At home, one person especially keeps him grounded. “My grandpa he always believes in me when I don’t believe in myself,” Box said.
Competition inside the program has helped push his game. “Will Whorton,” he said, when asked which teammate has left the biggest impression. “He is the best, and I want to be the best, so I need to compete with the best. He is a great player.”
Box enjoys the accountability that comes with playing an individual sport for his school. “I like being able to control weather or not I do good or not,” he said of his favorite part about representing Community Christian. A piece of advice he carries with him offers perspective. “At the end of the day, people don’t really care so do what makes you happy,” Box said.
He makes sure to acknowledge the people closest to him. “I want to shout my parents for taking care of me and my grandpa for giving me all my golf needs,” he said.
On the professional side, one PGA star stands out. “Justin Thomas because he has aura,” Box said.
