Q&A with Northwest Classen’s Athletic Director Chris Vandersypen – Presented by Southern Nazarene University

VYPE: When did you take over as AD, and what was your professional background prior to this position?

Chris Vandersypen: 2019. Football, Wrestling, Soccer, and Track coach previously.

VYPE: Why is community support essential to an athletic department?

CV: Community support benefits the Athletic Department in fundraising, ticket sales, and resource acquisitions.

VYPE: What should parents of incoming freshmen know as their student-athletes prepare to compete at the varsity level?

CV: They must be students first and foremost. Time management by both athletes and parents is essential.

VYPE: Which community partners and sponsors have supported your student-athletes this season?

CV: Metro Technology Centers, Kize Life Changing Bars, Bedford Camera and Video, impressions Printing, Dicks Sporting Goods, Perry Publishing and Broadcasting Companies, and TTCU Federal Credit Union

VYPE: Given the changing landscape of high school athletics, what is your perspective on the current state of prep sports in Oklahoma, and how can the experience be improved for students?

CV: Need to get away from the commercialization of our athletes and HS NIL’s. Get parents to be better role models during game competitions.

VYPE: What is the biggest challenge you face as an athletic director in 2026?

CV: Running a 6A program as the only person over athletics at my school.

VYPE: How do you enjoy spending your free time away from school?
CV: Spending time with my Grandchildren and playing golf when possible.

VYPE: What advice would you give to a first-time athletic director taking over a program?

CV: Time management is critical.

VYPE: What is your message to the senior class of 2026, and what would you like returning students to know?

CV: Enjoy competitive athletics while you can. This may be your last chance to compete, make the most of it and build lasting friendships and memories.
