Yukon’s Kamiyah Porter

It’s not easy being a freshman playing at the varsity level. Unless you’re someone who has the talent to contribute and help the team win. Kamiyah Porter is that type of player.

Playing power forward for head coach Roy Wyckoff, the freshman has impressed everyone with her play on the court. Coach Wyckoff said before the season, “Kamiyah has the ability to develop into a three-level scorer. She is an outstanding athlete that can guard on the perimeter or around the basket. She is looking to make an immediate impact as a 9th grader.”

But Porter gives credit to her teammates and the start they have had to the season.

“I have been impressed by Kenlea Jefferson and how she can lift me up if I am down. What I love about my teammates is they keep the energy up and will make sure your head is always held up high,” said Porter.

Porter has played basketball since the sixth grade and has continued to work on her skills.

“My strength of my game is rebounds and what I have improved on most is ball handling,” Porter said. “How I get myself mentally prepared for a game is watching some college basketball and talking to myself about what I am going to do during the game.”

Also a track athlete, Porter said her goal is to help Miller basketball win games and eventually make her way to college where she hopes to play at the next level.

“My goal for after high school is to get a scholarship to Texas University and continue doing basketball. After I do basketball, I wanted to become a dental hygienist,” said Porter.

Porter said she the moment when she started on varsity in her first home game was a moment she will never forget. Where she goes from here is up to her.
