Christian Heritage’s Devon Cruz Looks Back on First Season – Presented by Danielle Hill – Shelter Insurance

Devon Cruz may only be a freshman at Christian Heritage Academy, but he started playing basketball when he was in the first grade. Looking back on his first varsity experience, Cruz said he thought it went well.

“Our season has gone well. We have played tough competition that’s helped us grow throughout the season,” Cruz said. “I am a versatile player with a good shot, strong basketball IQ, solid ball handling. Overall, my defense has really improved over the season.”

Something Cruz said he has enjoyed this season are the personalities on the team.

“Ace Tran keeps the vibe up in our locker room with jokes. I love that all the guys push each other to grow in basketball and our relationships with Christ,” Cruz said. “A teammate I’ve been impressed with is Tate Campbell, he is an excellent leader on and off the court.”

As a student-athlete at CHA, Cruz said the environment is what makes it a great place.

“CHA teaches student-athletes to balance sports with school and relationships,” said Cruz.

Looking ahead, Cruz said he would love to continue playing at the next level and is inspired by someone on the team who has shown him a path forward.

“My plan is to be a college athlete and go into medicine. My trainer Nate Logan inspires me. He is a smaller guard that played at a collegiate level,” said Cruz.

In his first season, Cruz said his greatest accomplishment thus far came when it was announced he would be a starter for a varsity game.

“My greatest accomplishment is getting the opportunity to start a couple games this season as a freshman,” said Cruz.
