Choctaw’s Samantha Williams

Choctaw High School senior Samantha Williams has spent the past three years building her game and her confidence as a varsity golfer, leaning on a support system she says has shaped her both on and off the course.

Williams, who has played golf for four years total, said her time with the Lady Jackets has been defined by the people around her.

“The thing I love most about my teammates at Choctaw High School is how supportive, kind, loving and understanding they are,” Williams said. “I always feel pushed to be the best I can as a teammate but also as a person.” That encouragement has helped her take on challenges she once avoided. Williams said her teammates have pushed her beyond her comfort zone and celebrated with her when she reached important goals.

She credits her coach as one of the biggest influences in her athletic career.

“The person who inspires me the most has to be my coach,” Williams said. “No matter how I played or how I did, he still pushed me, supported me, made me feel welcome like I was a part of the team and never second-guess my abilities.”

Golf, Williams said, can be as demanding mentally as it is physically. She said the hardest part of competition is often battling self-doubt after a bad shot or difficult stretch on the course.

“The toughest part about competitive golf is the mental game,” Williams said. “Sometimes it’s getting in your head after a bad shot or two and getting down on yourself thinking that you’re not good enough.”

Even with those challenges, Williams sees clear strengths in her game. She pointed to her driver and chipping ability as areas of confidence, while also noting that improvement remains a daily goal.

“Chipping is a craft that takes a lot of time and a lot of practice,” Williams said. “I’m still working on it, and I’m working on my short game and hitting the greens more consistently.”

For Williams, wearing Choctaw’s colors carries meaning beyond competition. After graduation, she will continue both her academic and athletic career at Oklahoma Baptist University, where she plans to play golf and study allied health with the long-term goal of working in occupational therapy and pediatrics.
