VYPE: What inspired you to join Winter Guard?
Serenity Harman: I joined guard because my friends joined, and I also danced in the past. My teacher and directors told me to join, and it’s been great ever since.
VYPE: What is the story of your show? Name and song?
SH: The show is about passing away but being at peace with it. We accept all the things that happen during your lifetime. The show is called “Turn To Stone,” and the song is “Turn To Stone” by Ingrid Michaelson.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of performing?
SH: My favorite part of performing is knowing that all my hard work at rehearsals is paying off. I get to showcase all the hours I’ve put in. When I’m performing, I think about how everybody is proud of me.
VYPE: How do you connect with the emotional part of your story?
SH: I think about the people in my family who have passed away and how it must have felt for them. I try to think about their feelings and put myself in their shoes.
VYPE: What are some of your favorite moments?
SH: My favorite moments are hanging out with people at rehearsals or getting stars at contests. Spending time with my friends makes contests feel better, and it relieves some of my stress.
VYPE: What advice would you give to someone interested in the guard?
SH: It was scary at first, but at the contest, I heard people cheering, and I realized that people were there to support me. I would like another solo, but at the same time, I would like to give other people a chance at a solo. My advice would be to work hard no matter how embarrassing it might be, and it’s okay to step outside your comfort zone and, most importantly, have fun. Making mistakes is okay; you’ll learn from them like I did.
