Southmoore’s Kandace Burnett – Softball Spotlight – Presented by Christian Brothers Automotive

Softball has been Kandace Burnett’s classroom, her sanctuary, and the space where she discovered strength in struggle and confidence through faith.

Burnett, a senior at Southmoore High School, has been playing softball since she was six years old. Playing as a catcher and corner infielder, she says softball has given her a spirit of servitude.

“Being a part of this team has made me a better person,” says Burnett. “It has taught me how to. . . put other people before myself.”

She attributes much of her growth to the steady encouragement of her dad. His belief in her abilities gave her the confidence to keep going, even during the times she doubted herself. “He has always pushed me to be the best player that I can be,” Burnett shares. “He has always been there for me through the good and bad times.”

That consistency is how she approaches every game. No matter the opponent or the stakes, Burnett remains steady. “I always try to treat every game the same,” says Burnett. “I try to remain calm and trust in the work that I have put in.”

Her level-headed approach has been tested through adversity. “During my junior year of high school, I was struggling with my mental health,” reflects Burnett. “The biggest thing that helped me get through it was putting my faith in God’s hands.” Leaning into her faith gave her clarity and resilience; it’s something she continues to carry onto the field today.

Staying true to her own ambitions, Burnett is working towards beginning the season stronger than ever. With the help of a personal trainer, she hits the weight room four times a week, staying committed to her development as an athlete. She’s also focused on being a strong leader for her teammates, setting the tone with her work ethic and positivity.

“Being out on the field brings me joy,” Burnett says. “I am blessed to have been given the ability to play.”
After graduation, Kandace Burnett says she will continue with that same drive and pursue her academic and athletic journey at Iowa State University.
