LUTHER LIONS
Coach: LEVI LUNSFORD
5-6
OFFENSE
As the Luther Lions prepare for the upcoming season, head coach Levi Lunsford has six starters back from last year’s team. Those six will make a big difference in preparing the younger offensive starters for the long season. Royce Fife (5-7, 200, Sr.) will anchor the offensive line in an offense that looks to attack the entire field. Maurtice Wright (6-1, 245, Jr.) rushed for 353 yards on 66 carries last season with four touchdowns. Wright is joined in the backfield by Tucker Jones (5-9, 165, Sr.) who added 99 yards on the ground and two scores of his own. Tight end Gerardo Reyes (5-11, 200, Jr.) is a dual-purpose player who can help in the run and the passing game. Last season he had four receptions for 45 yards and a TD. Auston Wilson (5-10, 165, Jr.) starts at wide receiver where he made six receptions for 144 yards and a score. The departure of a key lineman has the staff looking at a few younger players who are more than capable of stepping into the role and giving great effort to the offensive line. The coaching staff consists of Matthew Price, Zack Smith, Z Caldwell, Terrance Artrip, Jace Wilson, Caleb Sanderson, and Colton Whitnah.
DEFENSE
The Lions will base in a 4-2-5 and play an attacking style of defense. It’s all about effort and takeaways. Reyes, like several teammates, will go both ways again this season. Last year Reyes had 39 tackles and six sacks from his defensive line/linebacker spot. Reyes is joined by Wright who accounted for 63 tackles, four TFLs, two sacks and one interception. Wilson is athletic enough to play linebacker or defensive back. As a sophomore Wilson made 59 tackles and picked off two passes. Bo Browning (6-0, 160, Jr.) is another defensive back who has a nose for big plays. Last year Browning made 71 tackles with five TFLs and two sacks. Add Jones to the secondary and you have a salty group in the back of the defense. Jones made 43 tackles with one sack and one pick.
