Norman’s Millie Ray
Millie Ray is looking forward to her senior year of Pom Squad at Norman High. It’s her fourth year on the Pom squad, and now she’s stepping into the role of captain, something she’s worked toward since she first joined the team.
“Being a student-athlete is about more than performing,” Millie said. “It’s about meeting people, inspiring the younger girls who want to do this someday, and being someone they can look up to.”
Millie has had many wonderful experiences in Pom, but the memory that stands out is performing at the University of Oklahoma stadium.
“You don’t get a chance to cheer in a college stadium very often in high school. It was an amazing experience and something I’ll always look back on.”
Pom runs in the family for Millie. Her mom, aunts, and cousins were all part of the Pom squad, but it’s her mom who’s been her biggest influence.
“She’s always pushed me to be the best version of myself and supported every decision I’ve made. She’s also the one who’s drawn me closer in my faith, and that’s had a huge impact on my life.”
Faith plays a big role for Millie, who’s active in Norman Tigers for Christ, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Kindness Club. She’s also involved with Tigerpalooza, a schoolwide philanthropy event.
In the classroom, science is her favorite subject, and she would like to pursue it in college. She also gives credit to her AP Language and Honors English II teacher, Ms. Diring, for helping her grow.
“She’s so encouraging and wants the best for her students.”
After graduation, Millie plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and study in the medical field. Before doing that, she’s looking forward to senior night against Bixby. “They’re tough, but last year we beat them. To get that win again on senior night would be so exciting.”
