Flying high into the air into a flip, and landing in her teammates’ arms, cheerleader Kimberlin Cheek completes her set. Cheek started in middle school, without any experience, but found her niche in cheerleading. Each year, she improved and advanced and competing further refined her expertise. They practice nonstop, especially when an audience is watching, such as in football games and assemblies.

“Before performing in front of a big crowd, I usually drink water and practice my skills to make sure everything is good before performing. When I get nervous, I usually dance the nerves away and talk to my friends,” Cheek said.

In cheerleading, one of the most challenging aspects is conditioning. It’s more than jumping and throwing people into the air. It takes timing, stunts, chants and perfect balance to execute a great run. Keeping the routines tight and confident results in cheers and shouts from the crowd.

“I’m very proud of mastering a switch-up quarter turn arabesque to the top. We make sure we’re all prepared for the hard work each day, and we all believe in ourselves,” Cheek said.

In their pyramid formation, she does tricks and spins, showcasing her refined skills. If the stunt messes up, her bases catch her, protecting Cheek from any injuries. The teamwork required is profoundly evident in each stunt performed.

“When my bases are my friends, I know that I can trust them. It makes it easier to trust my bases when we’re all in a good mood. Everyone on my team is very close, and we work together very well. We’ve made significant improvements this year. Don’t give up on anything because it’s all possible if you keep putting the work in and if you believe in yourself,”
