Midwest City Freshman Brooklyn Henderson first stepped into basketball because of someone very close to her.
“What got me into basketball is my brother, former Midwest City high school champion for 2024 Roy Henderson III,” she explained.
Watching him succeed made her want to follow in his path, and she has carried that motivation into her own game. Brooklyn plays point guard, a position she enjoys because of the way it fits her strengths.
“I’m very shifty and can get a bucket and create plays,” she said.
She feels her strongest parts of her game are her handles and getting to the rim. This season, she has one main focus as she continues to grow. She wants to continue working on her shooting. One of the things she appreciates most about basketball at Midwest City is the environment she’s surrounded by every day.
“My favorite thing about being on the team is our chemistry and the bond we have on and off the court,” she said.
That bond makes the daily work feel easier and gives her confidence as a freshman player.
Brooklyn has a consistent routine before she steps onto the court.
“First, I say a prayer to myself before every game. You know without God I am nothing,” she said.
After she prays, she locks in mentally by setting expectations for herself. She reminds herself who she is and added, “I just tell myself it’s time to cook anyone who tries to guard me.”
Adjusting to high school basketball has come with challenges, especially the speed of the game.
“The game of basketball in high school is definitely more fast paced, so I just had to adapt,” Brooklynn said.
Even with that challenge, she continues to push herself with the help of those around her. Brooklyn said the biggest influence on her journey has been her brother because he introduced the game to her. She also added her trainers that have been a part of her basketball journey.
Academically, her favorite class is Honors English.
“I have very good grammar and currently have an A in that class,” she said.
Balancing her schedule comes down to structure and effort.
“I start off my day at 5AM in the basketball gym for an hour workout, then after school I go to training or the gym on my own for a good 2 and a half hours,” Brooklyn said.
Her teammates might be surprised to know how unselfish she is on the court, that she used to play soccer, and was a gymnast. As for her favorite memory, she said it’s the process, and how far she’s come.
Her goals are to dominate as a prep player and grow into someone who can make her dreams of college and pro ball come true.
“To continue to stay the course and fry everyone that tries to guard me,” Brooklyn explained.
In the future she hopes to keep her grades strong, go D1, and eventually get drafted into the WNBA.
