Norman North’s Kyler Lester
Norman North High School wrestler Kyler Lester has built his reputation on discipline, toughness and a genuine love for his team, traits that have helped him emerge as a key contributor in the Timberwolves’ lineup.
Lester competes at 138 pounds and embraces the demanding culture of the Norman North wrestling room, where daily practices are designed to test both physical and mental limits. “I wrestle at 138 pounds. Our practices are very tough — they push us to our limits and help us become better wrestlers,” Lester said. He credits the sport with shaping his character, saying the discipline and work ethic he developed on the mat are qualities he expects to carry long after high school. “The discipline and work ethic that wrestling has taught me are things I will always carry with me, and I believe they will help me be successful in life,” he said.
A cornerstone of Lester’s experience at Norman North is the relationship with his coach, Justin DeAngelis, and the tight-knit bond within the team. Lester describes DeAngelis as a daily source of motivation who has challenged him to expand his limits. “My coach, Justin DeAngelis, inspires me to become a better wrestler. He has taught me discipline and how to push myself beyond what I thought I was capable of,” Lester said. He also values the chemistry in the wrestling room. “I love how close everyone on our team is and the strong connections we’ve built with each other. Along with our amazing coaches, that closeness makes wrestling at Norman North such a great experience,” he said.
This season, Lester has zeroed in on refining technique and raising his intensity level every day in practice. “I’ve been really focused on improving my technique this season and bringing more intensity into the practice room every day,” he said. Away from the spotlight of competition, one of his favorite memories came on a long bus ride home from a tournament in Arkansas after two grueling days on the mat. “The bus ride home was about five hours, and it was fun spending time with the team after two full days of wrestling hard at a tournament,” Lester said.
Lester carries the same thoughtful approach into the classroom, where World History is his favorite subject and teacher Joseph Foote stands out as a mentor. “If I had to choose, my favorite subject would be World History. My favorite teacher is Mr. Joseph Foote, who teaches World History,” he said. Away from wrestling and school, he enjoys spending time with friends, playing the piano and occasionally playing pickleball as a way to unwind.
Within the Norman North lineup, Lester points to teammates who shape the team’s personality. He says Jeremiah Harrison is the most vocal presence and one of the squad’s leaders, while Kaylor Jones keeps the room loose. “The teammate who keeps everyone laughing is Kaylor Jones — he always has something funny to say,” Lester said.
