Norman’s Nevaeh Churchwell
Norman High School junior Nevaeh Churchwell sees the field the way a left back should: early, calmly and with purpose. The Lady Tigers varsity soccer player has built her game around anticipation and positioning, two traits that help her break up attacks and join the offense when the moment is right.
“I think a strength of my game is anticipating the ball and positioning myself in a good position to defend the ball or to get into the attack,” Churchwell said.
That awareness has helped define her role for Norman, where she also is trying to sharpen another part of her game. Churchwell said she wants to become more aggressive and more comfortable when the ball is at her feet, a goal that reflects both self-awareness and a drive to improve.
“What I’m working to improve is my aggression on the field and being more confident on the ball,” she said.
Churchwell said one of the biggest reasons she enjoys playing at Norman is the bond she shares with her teammates. She described the Lady Tigers as a close-knit group that supports one another on and off the field, creating an environment that feels more like family than a roster.
“What I love most about the team and my teammates is how close and like a family we are,” Churchwell said. “Everyone is such great teammates on and off the field. We’re always having such a good time and always laughing together.”
That support system extends beyond school. Churchwell said her parents are her biggest inspiration because of their constant encouragement and steady example. She said they help her through challenges, push her to stay motivated and remind her to live with purpose every day.
On the field, she said the most difficult part of playing left back comes in one-on-one defending, especially deciding whether to pressure immediately or hold off and delay an attacker.
Churchwell also points to senior Avery Raney as a teammate who has made a lasting impression through leadership and work ethic.
Looking ahead, Churchwell already has a clear path. She said she plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford to continue her education and play Division II soccer.
