Norman’s Mackenzie Meyers
Norman High junior Mackenzie Meyers knows exactly what she values most about the Lady Tigers: connection. The varsity center back said the bond she shares with her teammates gives the group a different kind of strength, one that shows up well beyond the scoreboard.
“What I love most about my teammates is that we truly feel like a family,” Meyers said. “A lot of teams say they have that kind of chemistry, but for us, it’s real. We genuinely care about each other, and no one is ever left out.”
That sense of trust matters for a player working at the heart of the defense. As a center back, Meyers is often asked to organize the back line, make quick decisions and respond when pressure rises. She said the position demands poise as much as toughness.
“I think the toughest part of being a center back is staying calm under pressure,” Meyers said. “As the last line of defense, it’s crucial that I stay focused and do my job with confidence. Every mistake matters, so I have to remain strong, composed, and ready to respond no matter what happens on the field.”
Meyers said one of her biggest assets is her ability to win balls in the air, a skill she credits to her height, strength and confidence. At the same time, she said she is still working to make quicker decisions on the ball and become a more complete player.
She also draws motivation from the people around her. Meyers said her dad has been a steady source of inspiration because he pushes her to improve and keeps her focused on doing her best. She added that teammate Carsyn Deligans has taught her an important lesson about resilience.
“One of my current teammates, Carsyn Deligans, has taught me not to dwell on my mistakes,” Meyers said. “She does a great job of moving on quickly and focusing on how to fix things instead of getting upset with herself. I think that’s an important mindset to have, especially in sports.”
Away from soccer, Meyers is already thinking about her future. After graduation, she said she hopes to study forensic science, with a particular interest in crime scene investigation.
