Norman’s Avery Raney
VYPE: Avery, what position do you play and what grade are you in? What are you plans after you graduate?
Avery Raney: I play midfielder and I’m a senior. I will continue my athletic career playing Division 1 soccer at Arkansas State.
VYPE: What accomplishment on the field are you proudest of as a student-athlete?
AR: How our team competes. We have always been the underdogs since I was a freshman, so I think last year when we played Edmond Memorial at home first round of playoffs was memorable. We won that game and got a step closer. We ended up losing the next round to Bixby, but I think that has just made us more determined this year.
VYPE: What has your sport taught you that makes you a better person?
AR: Accountability. Owning your mistakes and realizing what you need to do next time. Not just for myself but for the team.
VYPE: Who inspires you?
AR: My parents. Both being former college athletes they understand the grind and know how important discipline is. They are both hard workers and the best supporters. They show up for me and my siblings and I know I can always lean on them for advice.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you?
AR: There are several that I was honored to look too early on in my high school season but in recent years I would say Jane Lockhart. She is a freshman at UCO, but I still call her weekly for advice and just appreciated her work ethic.
VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.
AR: Thank you to Coach Sheldon, Coach Stevie, and the entire coaching staff at Norman High for helping shape me into the player and person I am today. Your guidance, support, and belief in our team have meant so much to me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Norman High.
Thank you to my parents for always pushing me to work hard, stay focused, and be the best version of myself. Your support has made it possible for me to chase my dreams.
And thank you to my teammates. I’ve been blessed to play alongside such an incredible group of girls, and the memories we’ve made together on and off the field are something I will always cherish.
